Java 1.6 Download For Mac Os X

I didn’t find any clear instructions on upgrading the JDK on OS X so I thought I’d share my findings.

There are four updates to “Java for Mac OS X 1.5”. Since I couldn’t tell whether they were cumulative or not, I just downloaded and installed each one in sequence: update 1. Now you’d think you’d be done, but those updates only install JDK 1.6—they don’t make it the default. The Java JRE7 only seems to be available for Snow Leopard Version 10.7.3. Also re-enabling the applet plug-in didn't work either. I am not a Mac expert as you can probably tell so a link to a download or solution would be much appreciated rather than having to read articles that I don't understand. Whoever is telling you that you need to install Java 1.6 is mistaken.

**Update 1 **8/7/09: That link I created wasn’t quite right in the original post. It was creating a link with an absolute path. This apparently caused the Java Preferences app to fail to start and also caused WebKit/Safari to crash on all but the simplest web pages. Wierd. Corrected link creation above.
